We look forward to welcoming you
Our monthly in-person support groups are a welcoming space for survivors of both traumatic and non-traumatic brain injuries (TBI & ABI), along with their caregivers, family members, and anyone who supports the brain injury community. Here, you’ll find a place where you can truly be yourself—whether that means sharing your story, listening to others, or simply being in a room where people understand. Each gathering is designed to be a welcoming, supportive space. We regularly offer speakers or meaningful programs that provide helpful information and resources, while also leaving space for conversation and community.
We also offer support group meeting at rehabilitation hospitals for those who have recently experienced a TBI. Learning and Living with Brain Injury, for survivors and caregivers who are newly diagnosed and want to better understand how Alamo Head Injury Association can support them. This group meets monthly and focuses on education, support, and navigating the early stages of the journey—no reservation required.
In addition, we host a monthly virtual support group specifically for caregivers, meeting on the third Tuesday of each month (with the exception of November). This provides a flexible way for caregivers to connect, share, and receive support from wherever they are.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What can I expect the support group to be like?
Our support group is a relaxed, welcoming space where you can truly come as you are. We encourage you to come in comfortable clothing, enjoy a light dinner, and settle into a supportive environment with others who understand. Each meeting typically includes either a guest speaker or a simple group activity, giving you a chance to learn, connect, and engage at your own pace. We also keep the environment calm and low-noise, so if you’re sensitive to sound, you should feel comfortable here.
Most importantly, it’s a space for connection, support, and community—you’re always welcome.

2. Is it free?
Yes! Our support groups are completely free for everyone. We believe that support, connection, and community should always be accessible. We do our very best to make all of our programs free because your healing and support matter most.

3.What if I feel nervous or uncomfortable?
That’s completely okay and very normal. Trying something new can feel overwhelming, especially at first. You’re always welcome to bring a family member or friend with you for support. In fact, we encourage it! Having someone by your side can help you feel more comfortable and at ease.

4. Will I have to talk or share my story?
There’s no pressure to share - whether you want to talk, listen, or simply be present, all of it is okay.
5. Is there a virtual option for survivors?
At this time, we don’t offer a virtual support group specifically for survivors. We understand how important accessibility is and offering a virtual group for survivors is something we would truly love to provide in the future.
